Therapeutic Drumming is to help families maximize their strength at all stages of their child’s treatment journey and to ease the stress and distress from frequent hospitalizations or lengthy outpatient visits.
“As a professional drummer, I always had aspirations of utilizing music and drumming as a therapeutic tool. The Austin Hatcher Foundation made this dream a reality when they gave me the opportunity to use music and drumming to positively impact children and their families walking through cancer. As I have drummed with patients of all ages, I have been amazed how music and drumming has broken through barriers - offering children and their families a way to communicate without every saying a word, providing children with a diversion from pain and stress surrounding their treatment, and creating an outlet for children to express themselves creatively. I count it a true privilege to be on the Austin Hatcher Foundation and Hope and Cope family support teams at the Alabama Center for childhood cancer and blood disorders, which is a partnership between the UAB Division of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology at Children’s of Alabama.”
