Purpose:

The Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Cancer is a nonprofit organization committed to erasing the effects of pediatric cancer and optimizing quality of life through comprehensive care and services. From diagnosis through survivorship, we empower children and families by providing access to life-changing therapies, education, and support—always at no cost to them.

Overview:

The Grant Writer is responsible for securing institutional funding through high-quality grant proposals, foundation cultivation, and strategic reporting. This role is integral to achieving the organization’s $5M annual goal by driving $500K–$1M in foundation, corporate, and government grant revenue.

This individual brings excellent writing skills, deep research capabilities, and strong project management to build and maintain a robust grant pipeline aligned with the Foundation’s strategic priorities and programming.

Key Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities:

  • Publicize the mission of the Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Cancer
  • Be an advocate for families dealing with the effects of pediatric cancer.

Job Specific Responsibilities:

Grant Prospecting & Pipeline Strategy

  • Conduct ongoing research to identify new foundation, corporate, and government grant opportunities
  • Maintain a dynamic calendar of upcoming proposals, renewals, and reporting deadlines
  • Prioritize opportunities based on alignment, funding potential, and mission impact
  • Qualify 5–10 new funding prospects per quarter

Proposal Writing & Submissions

  • Write compelling LOIs, grant proposals, and supporting documentation
  • Work with program, development, and finance teams to gather data, budgets, and impact statements
  • Submit 50-75 grant applications per year
  • Tailor narratives to funder guidelines, using strong storytelling and outcomes-driven language

Grant Reporting & Compliance

  • Ensure timely and accurate submission of interim and final reports
  • Track grant deliverables and coordinate with internal stakeholders for compliance
  • Maintain funder records, correspondence, and document files

Foundation Relationship Support

  • Support Director of Development in stewarding top foundation relationships
  • Draft funder communications and impact updates
  • Help identify cultivation opportunities such as site visits, convenings, or presentations

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree  
  • 3-5 years of experience in grant writing and institutional fundraising
  • Proven track record of successfully securing grants of $25k+ from private or public sources
  • Excellent written communication, research and editing skills
  • Ability to translate programs into compelling funding narratives
  • Strong attention to deadlines, compliance, and funder expectations
  • Familiarity with donor databases, grant platforms, and budget templates
  • Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision
  • Well-organized with a detail-oriented approach
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
  • Ability to walk, bend, hear, see and lift 25 pounds
  • Passion for the mission of the Austin Hatcher Foundation and a deep commitment to improving the lives of children and families affected by pediatric cancer.
  • Must successfully complete a credit and criminal background check
